When office politics get out of control, it may create a toxic work environment. But it does not need to be like that. We are going to break down how to handle office politics professionally, regardless of what type of politics are on your workplace.
WHAT IS OFFICE POLITICS?
Merriam-Webster defines Office Politics as: the actions, attitudes, or behaviors that are utilized to get or keep power or an advantage within a business or business. Basically, each individual at the workplace is going to be liked or disliked by other folks, and those positive and negative relationships with other workers develop a political civilization.
Consider it. Have you ever complained to a coworker at work? Maybe you’re whining about another coworker who was not performing their job. Or perhaps you had a question, but you specifically avoided asking someone that you thought did not like you. All of these are examples of the kind of office politics that are present in each workplace.
Frankly, the term’Office Politics’ sounds like a terrible thing. If someone came to you and said how much they love playing office politics, it probably wouldn’t create a terrific first impression.
But the fact of the matter is that office politics are an inevitable by-product of social interaction, and they don’t automatically possess to be a poor thing.
Could they be a terrible thing? Absolutely. That is why you want to make sure that you’re thoughtful about how you react to office politics.
So how do you deal with office politics? Ramit recently interviewed a friend of his, Kevin Hillstrom, about the way he has coped with office politics in the past. Kevin is a powerful CEO today, but when he was an analyst in Land’s End, he fought with office politics.
1.Don’t be Naive
Most people believe the ideal method to deal with workplace politics is to avoid them completely. While this sounds fantastic, it’s really hard to do in training. After Kevin experienced his very first meeting with all the executives, he recognized naivety about office politics is a bad approach. Instead, acknowledge the sport being played around you. When you understand the situation, you can opt to behave in a way that protects your ethics and keeps you out of political lands.
2.Learn How to read the space
Some people have difficulty discovering political dynamics. Acoordintg to Kevin Hillstrom, he is one of the people who once failed to read the space. When he had been providing an important presentation to a group of executives, he did not look closely at the political dynamics involving the executives, that had a massive impact on how they perceived Kevin’s demonstration.
Consider it. If I am a high executive, and I really don’t like Jim from Sales, also Kevin’s presentation really appeals to Jim from Sales, I am much less likely to be persuaded. But if Kevin had read the room, he could have appealed to every executive and persuaded all of them.
3.Watch what other powerful people do
While Kevin was working at Land’s End, then he overheard his boss talking about the way he had no business skills. Obviously this comment stung, however, Kevin used it as a wake up call to boost himself.
He started paying attention to exactly what powerful people in the office did. He mentioned that among his bosses was able to construct a reputation of having the facts and advice to make good decisions, and people over her noticed and paid attention to her. Instead of just copying her, Kevin then used this to attempt to construct his own reputation based on the way he viewed the world.
4. BUILD A REPUTATION
Building a reputation is political. Nonetheless, it’s not a terrible thing. This is 1 example of how it is possible to utilize workplace politics to further your career without developing a toxic work environment.
5.Work on your communication abilities
Whether your workplace is filled with politics or not, working in your communication skills is ALWAYS helpful. By being a better communicator, you can prevent the type of misunderstandings that gas office play. You might even build a fantastic reputation for yourself by communicating clearly. Communication was a big area of weakness for Kevin, so he required an 8 week long course to learn how to persuade people.
You most likely don’t need to go to this extreme, but improving his communication abilities helped Kevin get encouraged, and eventually lead his own company.
